Russian president, Jordanian king to discuss situation in Libya,
MOSCOW, April 7 (Itar-Tass) -- The situation in North Africa,
specifically in Libya, and in the Middle East will be one of the central
topics at the talks between President Dmitry Medvedev and King Abdullah II
of Jordan, who is arriving in Russia on a working visit on Thursday, April
7.
The king will also meet with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
In addition to Medvedev's recent meetings with top-level
representatives from the region, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, Palestinian National Administration leader Mahmoud Abbas, Saudi
Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal, Thursday's talks will continue
Moscow's intermediating efforts to normalise the situation in the region.
"In the context of dramatic events in North Africa and the Middle
East, special attention at the meeting will be paid to international
issues and regional security," the presidential press service told
Itar-Tass on Wednesday, April 6.
"Given the serious role Russia and Jordan are playing in the
Palestinian-Israeli peace process, the Middle East settlement will be
another important topic at the upcoming meeting between Medvedev and
Abdullah II," the Kremlin said. "Moscow and Amman have identical positions
on this issue and advocate the speediest resolution of all existing
problems through constructive and direct dialogue between the Palestinians
and Israelis."
The two leaders will also discuss in detail the current state and the
future of trade and economic ties between the two countries.
"The task of building up and diversifying trade turnover to the level
corresponding to the intensity of Russian-Jordanian relations is assuming
special significance now," the press service said. "This will require the
big potential of bilateral cooperation to be tapped, especially in such
fields as energy, including nuclear energy, the military and technical
cooperation, industrial production, agriculture, metallurgy, transport,
and others."
