Lavrov goes to Kiev to attend meeting of CIS Council of Foreign
MOSCOW, April 7 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov
will go to Kiev to attend a meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign
Ministers.
The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will turn 20 in December.
The meeting to open on Friday, April 8, at Ukraine's Diplomatic Academy
will be a jubilee one.
The ministers will discuss a number of documents to be submitted to
the heads of states and government in the next several months. These
include draft agreements on the coordination of activities of law
enforcement agencies upon receipt of information on the seizure or
hijacking of planes and in countering offences related to intellectual
property.
The heads of the delegations will also discuss a draft agreement on a
common system of registration of third-party citizens and stateless
persons to enter the CIS.
The ministers will pay close attention to cooperation in the fields of
science and culture and consider draft agreements on the creation of a
council on cooperation in the field of fundamental science, and a concept
for the development of education in the field of culture and art in the
CIS countries.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said the ministers
would also discuss progress in the drafting of a statement by the heads of
the CIS countries in connection with the 70th anniversary of the beginning
of the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War.
The meeting in Kiev will be the first major event during Tajikistan's
presidency in the CIS. Moscow, which performed these functions last year,
confirmed that it was ready to assist Dushanbe in fulfilling the
Commonwealth's tasks.
