Democrats choose Obama as party nominee
Washington, Aug 29 (PTI) - Senator Barack Obama made
history when Democrats officially nominated him as party's
presidential candidate, the first black nominee for a major
US party, to fight and end eight years of Republican control
of the white House.
The routine at the Convention Centre Wednesday in
Denver by way of the Roll Call was put to an end by none other
than Senator Obama's chief rival in the primaries Senator
Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The New York Democrat called for a suspension of rules
and asked for the nomination of 47-year-old Illinois Democrat
by acclamation which was then put forward to a voice vote by
the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
"Let's declare together with one voice right here,
right now that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be
our president," Senator Clinton said as she sought to put an
end to the roll call proceedings where states announced their
votes in an alphabetical order. Some states were splitting
their delegations and voting for Senator Clinton but a solid
majority was with Obama.
Clinton ask delegates to make Obama's selection
unanimous "in the spirit of unity, with the goal of victory."
They agreed, with a roar.
Slogans of "Obama" and "Yes we can" floated up from
the convention floor as Obama's victory was sealed.
The third day of the Convention proceedings will see
speeches from a galaxy of democratic stars that will include
the Vice-Presidential nominee Senator Joseph Biden and the
former President Bill Clinton, both of whom are scheduled for
prime time in night. PTI SK
