UK pursue greater trade access for Pakistan in EU, Pakistan, EU Free Trade Agreement
Islamabad, April 05, 2011 (PPI): United Kingdom will pursue greater trade access for Pakistan in European Union including Free Trade Agreement between Pakistan and EU, says a declaration Tuesday on Pakistan-UK Enhanced Strategic Dialogue held here.
Declaration said UK, Pakistan share common history, relationship is visible in vibrant diaspora community in UK, cultural, linguistic, educational, commercial, economic, family, other ties that British people, organizations have to Pakistan. Both have shared interest in promoting peace, security, stability in the region and world. Enhanced Pakistan-UK Strategic Dialogue is based on sovereignty, equality, mutual trust building, intensify cooperation. Talks were to build stronger, deeper, more practical Pak-UK bilateral ties, supported by commercial engagement, enabling both countries become more secure, stable, prosperous.
Enhanced Strategic Dialogue will be actively driven forward by Pakistan’s President & Prime Minister and British Premier. Annual meetings at Heads of Government level will review bilateral ties, determine priorities. Foreign Ministers will meet bi-annually to review progress.
Existing working groups currently operating under Strategic Dialogue - Joint Working Group, Defence Cooperation Forum, Joint Judicial Cooperation Working Group, Arms Control & Disarmament Dialogue & annual Development Partnership Review will continue to operate as part of Strategic Dialogue.
Talks on trade promotion led by Commerce Ministers, supported by UK Trade & Investment, Department for Business, Innovation, Skills, Foreign & Commonwealth Office & Pakistan’s Commerce, relevant Ministries to enhance cooperation on trade, investment. UK explore ways to improve Pakistan’s competitiveness and pursue joint activities in key sectors.
Two sides agreed to create civilian-military National Security Dialogue comprising discussion on regional security, CT & non-proliferation. Exchanges on rule of law issues will be led by Ministry of Justice & Pakistan’s Law Ministry. It will include strands of work on policing, judicial system, organized crime, human trafficking, narcotics control.
Further practical cooperation led by Defence & Interior Ministers and involving wide range of Departments, Agencies from both sides, building on senior contacts, existing Joint Working Group & Defence Cooperation Forum. Led by Development Secretary and Pakistan’s Finance Minister, UK will support Pakistan to tackle education emergency and getting more girls into school. It will be supplemented by British Council & Education Ministers in providing structure for and expansion of higher education, research links.
Both sides will promote cooperation in higher education; interaction among academia; student exchange program; joint research, collaboration in science, technology, specialized disciplines, cooperate in programs that support capacity building for health professionals, institutions.
