CLIMATE CHANGE BENEFITS RICE FIELDS
Banjarmasin, S. Kalimantan, Aug 28 (ANTARA) - This year's climate change seemed to benefit agriculture especially rice fields in South Kalimantan, Aus Al Kausar, Head of Food and Horticulture Plantation Office of the province said here Thursday.
If the dry season had begun in May or June drought would have been possible to happen followed without a harvest, he told Antara reporter.
"Let us observe the rice fields when it started to dry in June whereas in such a condition they needed a great deal of water However, thanks to climate change the rice fields are no longer dry that they continue growing and producing crops," he explained.
Therefore South Kalimantan rice production will fulfill even exceed the estimation for 2008 as it was in 2007.
H.J. Sriyono, Head of South Kalimantan Agriculture Office said that the province's production target according to second estimation in 2008 reached more than 1.9 million tons or increased three percent from last year.
Whereas the target for 2009 was estimated to reach two million tons, Sriyono added.
The central area of agriculture as well as the granary for the province consisting of 13 regencies or municipalities are located in Banjar and Barito Kuala (Batola) Regencies and in Hulusungai or "Banua Enam" region including Tapin, Hulu Sungai Selatan (HSS) and Hulu Sungai.***3***
