Project to combat violence against women launched in Lahore: Intisar Jafferi

Islamabad, April 05, 2011 (PPI): Punjab police in collaboration with InternationalIe Zusemmenarbeit (GIZ), a German Agency for International Cooperation have launched Gender Responsive Policing Project in order to combat violence against women by strengthening Gender Crime Centre (GCC) and taking into consideration the principles of the rule of law and gender equality.

Dr. Khola Iram, Principal Advisor GIZ-GRP, Mohammad Yasin Qureshi, DIG Muzaffarabad, AJ&K, Sharjil Karim Kharal, AIG (Forensic Division), Karachi, Sindh, Ashraf Zubair Qureshi, AIG (Establishment HQ Islamabad Police ) and Intisar Hussain Jafferi, SSP Investigation, CPO Lahore, Punjab announced this while addressing a news conference here at National Press Club on Tuesday.

Giving details of the project, Intisar Jafferi said that basic purpose of the project is to promote gender sensitive policing enabling citizens, especially women and girls in distress to have equal access to policing services.

He informed that training course was arranged at Women Campus Chohang, Lahore to improve knowledge and skills of women police officers and prepare them for better positions in their respective organizations.

He said that after completion of the course, qualified women will be placed in regular police stations as investigation officers and SHOs, which will be a major step to integrate women in mainstream policing. He said other aspects of the project include, training of trainers on gender sensitization and on modern teaching skills giving due consideration to adult teaching techniques. "We have trained at least two police trainers as lead trainers from all police training institutes in Punjab", he said.

Intisar Jafferi said that training of trainers on SOPs for dealing with women victims of violence and investigating crimes against women was carried out in March 2011. He said police trainers and police officers from the field were trained on the subject, adding, "We are now preparing to hold orientation sessions on SOPs throughout the province with the help of our trainers".

He further said that four ladies complaint units are being established in Lahore with the help of GIZ/Gender Responsive Policing Project. He said these units would also be established in other districts.
