Pak-UK agreed to enhance strategic partnership

Islamabad, April 05, 2011 (PPI): Pakistan and Britain have agreed to enhance strategic partnership in the fields of Trade, Security and Education between the two countries. Addressing a joint news conference with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani here Tuesday , British Prime Minister David Cameron they said we had useful and constructive discussions on all issues of bilateral interest and regional peace and security.

They said wide ranging discussion were held in the areas of health, education, security and efforts to counter terrorism between the two sides.

Prime Minister Gillani said he apprised the British Premier about his recent talks with the Indian Prime Minister Man Mohansingh and Pakistani efforts to bring peace and stability in the region.

The British Prime Minister said friendship with Pakistan is unbreakable and these relations will be further expanded in the time to come. He said there are about one million Pakistanis living in his country and contributing in its development.

He said the development of Pakistan is in our interest and we have agreed to enhance bilateral trade to two point five billion pounds by 2015.

The British Prime Minister said we will work with our friends in Pakistan to fight terrorism. He said Pakistan has offered numerous sacrifices and we have shared interest in combating terrorism.

He said a peaceful, stable and democratic Afghanistan is in the interest of everyone and we support Afghan led reconciliation process.

To a question he said his country will enhance financial support to Pakistan in education and health sector particularly educating women and children.

He said the UK will also help Pakistan for getting more trade access as Pakistan doesn't need aid but trade.

Answering a question regarding handing over of former President Pervez Musharraf in Benazir assassination case, he said both the countries have no extradition treaty. However, Pakistan has not yet made any request in this regard.

To another question he said no restriction has made on visa issuance to Pakistanis but issuance of visas to Pakistani students is being streamlined as a number of students in the past violated visa rules and overstayed there.

Responding to a question regarding on-going war on terrorism, the British Prime Minister said his country wants to work more closely with Pakistan to combat this menace.

He said his country is determined to help Pakistan in promoting quality education and it will launch a new programme under which four million Pakistani students would get education in UK by 2015.

Prime Minister Gillani said that he has held useful and positive talks with his British counterpart and expressed the confidence that the contacts between the countries would be more consolidated with this visit.

To a question, he said that Pakistan is playing major role in combating terrorism and it has rendered matchless sacrifices in this war. He said the NATO losses are much less than Pakistan in this war. He said Pakistan is ready to further sharing of intelligence with other countries to expedite action against these elements.

He said today both the countries have launched comprehensive strategic dialogue hoping that it will go a long way in further strengthening Pakistan-UK ties. He said Pakistan offers tremendous opportunities for enhancing trade and investment. He invited British investors to come to Pakistan and earn more profits through investment.
