TRADE BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND INDIA CAN DOUBLE IN THREE YEARS, SAYS DR ABDUL KALAM
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- Bilateral trade between Malaysia and
India, which reached US$10 billion this year, has the potential to double in three years time, according to eminent Indian scientist and former president of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
The target is achievable with the conclusion of the Asean-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations for trade in goods after six years of negotiations, he said.
"The India-Malaysia Comprehensive Economic Co-Operation Agreement which is
now under negotiations will also be an important milestone," he said in his
lecture entitled "The Dynamics of Societal Transformation" at the Khazanah
Global Lecture 2008 here Thursday night.
The event was also graced by the Regent of northern state of Perak, Raja
Dr. Nazrin Shah and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Abdul Kalam also urged Indian and Malaysian industries to transform
themselves from being export oriented domestic enterprises into Globally
Integrated Enterprise (GIE) using technology, innovation and core competence in
a borderless world.
However, enterprises from both countries must first be globally competitive
and should have global presence with competitive products, systems and
solutions, he said.
"We can mutually think and put into action from the industrial society to
become the knowledge system powerhouse," he said.
It is essential that enterprises adopt the global mindset to spread their
wings to further their reach and should be the key agents of change in
dispersing technology, he said.
In order to transform towards GIE, he said enterprises must also understand
several characteristic such as having the same brand worldwide, the best leaders
from the global talent pool, adaptation of uniform quality standards and
processes worldwide.
He also pointed out the importance of research and development towards
meeting the goals and having a global mindset.
