Thai Songkran Festival begins

BANGKOK, April 6 (TNA) - This year's Songkran Festival has begun. Shops selling Songkran Festival supplies have sprung up throughout the country.
Shops in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai District, including Sailom-Joy and Doi-Wao markets, have put on water guns and an array of plastic water pools on sale, as customers have begun shopping for festivity supplies. Product prices range from 30 to 300 baht.
In Chiang Mai, people have begun buying materials for the traditional Songkran ritual, ‘Rod Num Dam Hua’ ceremony, with sales of sarong, loincloth, and round-necked T-shirts increasing by 30 percent.
In Songkhla, the city municipal has decorated Samila Beach, including nearby coastal areas, pavilions and roads, to prepare for celebrations, which will kick-off on April 13. Large numbers of local and foreign tourists are expected to participate in the festival, which will be mainly held in 2 areas. One will be held in Hat Yai District’s major commercial area, under the theme of ‘Hat Yai Midnight Songkran Festival’, highlighted by a water bout at night. The other will be held at Songkhla municipal city in a traditional Thai style. (TNA)
