Relief operation in flood-hit Southern Thailand continues

BANGKOK, April 6 (TNA) - Efforts to restore Thailand’s flood-hit southern region continued on Wednesday as floodwaters slowly receded, marking the third week of devastation.

The latest forecast reports sporadic showers are still taking place throughout 30 per cent of the region this morning.

The Interior Ministry’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said the toll of flood damages from March 23 to April 6, including 10 provinces, has affected over two million people.

The department disclosed 51 people have been confirmed dead, 21 of them in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 10 each in Surat Thani and Krabi, five in Phatthalung, two each in Chumphon and Trang, and one in Phang Nga, while over 30,000 are reported to have become sick.

About 1.09 million hectares of farmland have also been flood-ridden, particularly rubber plantations, it added, noting restorations will soon begin in Phang Nga, Narathiwat and Satul.

Meanwhile, Dr. Pasakorn Akarasewee, Director-General of the Public Health Ministry’s Bureau of Epidemiology, stated there have been no reports of disease outbreaks in the areas, but insisted authorities will remain vigilant over the next month, due to a potential risk of contamination as water levels recede.
