Next election either late June or early July, says Thai PM

BANGKOK, April 6 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva assures that the next general election will happen in either late June or early July. He also expresses his concern the opposition will win the polls and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra returns to power.
Abhisit, in his capacity as the Democrat Party leader, made his stance known during the celebration of the 65th anniversary of his party Wednesday morning. Islamic leaders conducted a religious ceremony for the blessing of the party.
Abhisit told the people who attended the ceremony that the upcoming election would show fierce competition as opinion surveys found that the popularity levels of political parties were different by less than 1%. He urged his Democrats to do their best to campaign for votes so that their party will win the election and solve national crises. He said his party would please the people if they let it continue with national administration.
However, if the opposition wins the election, Abhisit said Thaksin will return and serious violence will occur. If conflicts reemerge, the country cannot progress.
Regarding solutions to the violence-plagued far South, the prime minister said his government adhered to the maintenance of order and justice as well as peaceful solutions. He said those who visited the region should realize that the governmental policies implemented there in the past two years have made a difference.
The prime minister admitted that a series of violent incidents have occurred in the region in the past few months. He said that insurgents tried to use violence to trigger hatred and the perception of injustice. However, he said the government would not be distracted and would adhere to its peaceful solutions and law enforcement.
“I admit that problems have not been solved in some areas. Everything takes time. The government will continue with its proactive political policies and keep informing the international community of what is really happening in southern Thailand,” Abhisit said. (TNA)
