No radioactive contaminants found in Thailand’s seawater

BANGKOK, April 6 (TNA) - No radioactive contaminants have been detected in Thai waters despite radiation being released from the troubled Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan last month, an environmental safety official said on Wednesday.

Supat Wangwongwattana, Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, said an analysis of seawater samples from the Gulf of Thailand, by the Office of Atoms for Peace, showed no detectable contamination, particularly of any harmful traces of cesium, although he insisted more tests will be conducted over the next few weeks to ensure public safety.

Supat revealed that authorities will move from Songkhla where they are now and begin to collect water samples from southern Narathiwat Province. Experts from the Meteorological Department will meet with his department Wednesday afternoon to discuss the possibility of radiation spreading to Thailand.

In the meantime, authorities have calculated the movement of radiation will likely spread from the plant in the direction of the Pacific, he said. (TNA)
