Iraq needs Electoral Commission far from political partisanship, says Nujeifi



Baghdad (NINA) – Parliament Speaker, Osama Al Nujeifi, expected that Iraq witnesses a series of elections due to “unstable political relations statuses,” a statement issued by the parliament presidency said.

During reception of a UN delegation headed by Elections Affairs Advisor, Jose Maria, Nujeifi added “the districts elections are approaching, as well as the provincial elections; there will be general elections in case no progress in the government and political process conduct was achieved.”

He went on saying “the center of all of these elections is the Electoral Commission, pointing out that “the parliament started reviewing its performance. Head of the commission and a number of commissioners will be hosted in parliament during the coming days.”

Nujeifi stressed Iraq’s need to “a commission that amounts to international standards, acquire Iraqis’ satisfaction, and run by nonpartisan affiliated people,” stressing that “the UN’s role is going to be very important in supporting the democratic process in Iraq.”

For his part, Maria reiterated “the UN’s readiness to provide all kinds of support possible to succeed the democratic process I Iraq,” referring that he totally agree with Nujeifi about selecting commissioners far from political partisanship.
