Thai prime minister visits India and invites investors to Thailand

BANGKOK, April 5 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his delegation on Tuesday officially visited India and invited Indian investors to increase their presence in Thailand. He promised his government will facilitate their businesses with non-tariff privileges. Indian investors gave the delegation a warm welcome.

The prime minister’s delegation arrived at Palam airport in New Delhi at 12.30am local time. The visit began with a breakfast meeting with leading Indian businessmen. On the occasion, the prime minister invited Indian investors to do businesses in Thailand. He assured them the government would facilitate their businesses with non-tariff privileges and streamline procedures. Leading Indian businessmen said they found the invitation enticing.

Thailand Trade Representative Kiat Sittheeamorn, who is in the prime minister’s delegation, said that India was a large country with a huge population. A free trade agreement between Thailand and India is currently increasing the value of Thai exports to India. Thailand plans to increase the value of its exports to India to 10 billion US dollars next year and attract even more Indian tourists.

Kiat said Thailand was interested in investing in India, especially in the construction sector in which it has experience. He said India was developing itself and needed the construction of infrastructure, buildings, communities and transport systems. The Indian government allocates as much as 500,000-1,000,000 US dollars for the development and this should be a good chance for Thai investors.

Then the prime minister and his delegation went to Rashtrapati Bhawan or the Indian presidential house where they were officially welcomed. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh received the Thai prime minister and walked the latter past the guards of honor.

The Thai prime minister told Indian reporters that he paid the visit to emphasize the long-standing bilateral relations and he expected both countries to further develop their ties.

After laying a garland at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, the prime minister met Indian Finance Minister S M Krishna. Then the prime minister and his delegation met Indian President Pratibha Patil and had a luncheon with representatives of Indian councils of commerce and industries at his hotel. (TNA)
