Thai military stands by bilateral mechanisms in dealing with Cambodia

BANGKOK, April 5 (TNA) - The Thai military reaffirmed on Tuesday it would uphold bilateral mechanisms to solve problems with Cambodia, dismissing any third-party involvement.

Armed Forces Chief General Songkitti Chakkabatr insisted on Thailand's compliance, with a bilateral agreement signed between the Thai and Cambodian governments in 1995, under which the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) is officially authorised to hold annual meetings in either Thailand or Cambodia, to discuss and work out solutions to problems bilaterally.

General Songkitti acknowledged recent meetings of ASEAN foreign ministers and UN Security Council, also clearly resolved Bangkok and Phnom Penh hold bilateral talks and address their problems through their existing mechanisms. He said that the Thai military was prepared for the next GBC meeting in Cambodia at any agreed date and venue, as this year is Phnom Penh's turn to host the bilateral meeting.

The Thai supreme commander made it clear the Thai military would not take part in any GBC meeting hosted by a third party, even Indonesia, the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), noting it should be irrelevant to have such an observer mission. (TNA)
