Thailand likely to be on Washington's PWL for another year

BANGKOK, April 5 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Intellectual Property Protection, said on Tuesday it was likely Thailand would remain on the United States' priority watch list (PWL) for another year, under Article 301 of the tough US Trade Act.

The department's director-general, Patchima Thanasanti, acknowledged Washingtion had reviewed whether Thailand should be removed from the PWL. But Thailand was likely to be on the PWL for one more year, given tentative results of the US review indicating Bangkok had fallen short of the US' criteria to be removed from the list.

According to the official, Thailand's prevention and crackdowns on pirated goods have not yet met the US government's demand. The PWL's 2011 review will be released publicly this month.

Patchima said Washington has demanded Thailand further revise its laws, to ensure more effective prevention and suppression of pirated products.

She said three new Thai bills on anti-pirated products and services covering bans on pirated VCDs and CDs, and unlawful on-line services, as well as a stern legal punishment against violators of intellectual property rights, will be pending in Thai parliamentary passages in coming months. (TNA)
