Hundreds of Pakistanis, Indians hostage to Somali pirates, Ansar Burney

Karachi, April 04, 2011 (PPI): Pakistan’s former Federal Minister for human rights and Chairman Ansar Burney Trust International, Ansar Burney has disclosed that hundreds of Pakistanis and Indians are hostage to Somali pirates and requested Army, Navy and Air Force of Pakistan, India, America, Europe, Middle East countries and United Nations to take stern action against pirates to get them released.

Ansar Burney said that the Somali pirates are capturing hundreds of Pakistanis, Indians and other nationals every month with their Vessels and hijacking of ships is increasing day by day in that region. “It is not possible without the support of some of the neighbouring countries’ governments and organizations for their interests”, he viewed in a statement on Monday.

He questioned that from where these Somali Pirates are getting sophisticated weapons to hijack vessels from open Sea, and added that it is not possible without the support of some of the African and Middle Eastern countries because millions of dollars are paid as ransom to pirates for release of crew members of hijacked ships.

“The pirates might be using this ransom of millions of dollars for Terrorism,” Burney added.

Ansar Burney said his organization is already working for early release of dozens of Pakistanis, Indians, Sri Lankans, Tanzanians and other nationals on different Vessels hijacked by Somali Pirates several months ago and now they are in their private prisons in open sea without proper food or water.

Ansar Burney recently met in Cairo, Egypt with the owner of one of the hijacked Vessel M.V. Suez hijacked by Somali Pirates, and urged him to start negotiations with the pirates for early release of Pakistanis and other crew members of the hijacked ship in Somalia.

The meeting of Burney was fruitful as the owner of the Ship Abd ElMeged Matar agreed to start negotiations with pirates again and to pay the salaries of the crew of the hijacked ship to their families without any further delay.

Four Pakistanis and other crew members of the ship captured by Somali Pirates nine months ago are still hostages.

Burney said that Indian crew members are NK Sharma, Satnam Singh, Parshad Chohan, Sachin Padoran, John Rose Bisco, Ravinder Singh and Pakistani crew members are Syed Wasi Hassan, Ali Rehman, Syed Alam and Mohammad Muzammil.

MV Suez was hijacked by the Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden on August 2, 2010, with 6 Indians, 4 Pakistani, 4 Sri Lankans and 11 Egyptians on board, said Burney.
