Japan Defense Minister Thanks U.S. for Quake Relief Support
Tokyo, April 4 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa on Monday expressed Tokyo's gratitude for U.S. support in search and relief activities in the Sanriku coastal areas following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan.
Aboard the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, Kitazawa read a message from Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
Japan has never felt as confident to have the United States as a friend as in the latest disaster, Kitazawa said on behalf of Kan, adding that this is a proof of the bilateral bonds created by the two countries' alliance that have lasted for half a century.
Kitazawa also expressed his gratitude, saying he is certain the Japan-U.S. alliance will become stronger as the joint relief operations are deeply engraved in the hearts of people in both countries.
Kitazawa made the remarks before some 2,000 U.S. servicemen aboard the aircraft carrier. U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos and Adm. Patrick Walsh, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, also attended.
