Politicians smear over coup in Thailand

BANGKOK, April 5 (TNA) - Key members of the Democrat Party together with the Electoral Commission, have urged people to ignore rumors of a coup.

Chuan Leekpai, Democrat Party Chief Advisor, encouraged members of the public to uphold the law for the country’s sake, noting when a House dissolution is finally announced, state elections should follow as part of the democratic process.

Chuan, a former Thai prime minister, acknowledged there may be certain groups wishing for a coup, but he insisted on rejecting the idea, noting his party will stand firm by its principles, and will not be fueling the situation with further comments, particularly over any election boycotting.

Meanwhile, Culture Minister Nipit Intarasombat said he expects an election will definitely be held under present conditions, and therefore, disregards any talks which would be an obstacle to the process.

Similar rhetoric also came from Election Commissioner Praphan Naikowit, who urged all parties to end talks of a coup, including the “No Vote” movement, noting it will only bring setbacks to Thai politics, and may even hurt Thailand’s image abroad.

Praphan said both the Defense Minister and Army Chief have also reaffirmed support for the next election, and therefore believes there will be no coup, adding the parliament will pull through all three election-related organic laws, before House dissolution. (TNA)
