Thai police prepare safety measures for Songkran revelers

BANGKOK, April 5 (TNA) - Thai police forces are preparing measures to facilitate and ensure traffic safety for road users during the upcoming Songkran Festival.
Police Lieutenant General Danaitorn Wongthai, Thailand's Assistant National Police Chief, held a video-conference with provincial police commissioners region 1-9 and chief of the Royal Thai Police's central investigation bureau to discuss and work out measures--aimed at providing traffic safety and reducing road accidents during the upcoming Songkran festival nationwide, beginning on April 8.
According to the assistant national police chief, people and international tourists in Thailand are expected to begin their Songkran traveling on April 8, peaking on April 9.
Police Lieutenant General Danaitorn said that the Royal Thai Police has assigned metropolitan police forces to provide safety for both the Songkran revelers and their assets at all main bus terminals; while four railway police officers, instead of normally two, have been assigned on board each train to search for suspicious persons and luggage.
For flood-hit areas in the Thai South, the assistant national police chief revealed that local highway police have been told to coordinate with the Department of Rural Roads to repair roads and set up bypasses in time for road use during the annual Songkran Festival. (TNA)
