PRACTICE OF ENDOWMENT CAN GENERATE M'SIA'S ECONOMY
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- The practice of endowment or 'wakaf' is capable of generating the economy of a nation besides functioning as a medium outlined in the syariah in implementing one's social responsibility, said Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak, Thursday.
"Like Egypt, this country generates almost the whole of its basic economy
from wakaf funds and assets. In fact, the Al-Azhar University, which is more
than one thousand years old, is not only famous as an educational centre but it
is also the pride of Egypt as a very influential wakaf institution.
"Similarly, awareness on the practice of wakaf in this country is also
nothing new.
"The wakaf institution has made significant contribution to the growth of
religion and development of human capital with the existence of the mosque
institution and educational institutions such as the madrasah," he said when
launching the national-level 'Wakaf Al-Quran and Salam Ramadan' programme at
the Multipurpose Hall of the Federal Territory Mosque, here.
Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Dr
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, his deputy, Dr Mashitah Ibrahim and Religious Advisor
to the Prime Minister, Dr Abdul Hamid Othman.
He said the existence of such institutions was contributed by the previous
generations through property endowment and as such, Muslims today should also
continue this practice.
In an effort to enhance the status of the wakaf institution in the
country,
the Department of Wakaf, Zakat and Pilgrimage was set up in 2004 to ensure that
the management of zakat, wakaf and pilgrimage was carried out more
systematically, efficiently and effectively.
Najib said the government would continue to find an effective formula to
enhance religious governance by adopting an approach based on current needs so
that assets contributed in the form of zakat, wakaf or donation could be managed
in an efficient and transparent manner.
With regard to the 'Wakaf Al-Quran' programme organised by the Dewan Amal
Islam Hadhari (DAMAI), he said the Muslim minority communities throughout the
world must be assisted through various ways including providing them with the
Al-Quran.
"If necessary, we should send Al-Quran teachers to guide this minority
communities," he said.
The programme gives an opportunity to Muslims in this country to donate a
minimum of RM 1 and a maximum of RM10 through the short messaging service (SMS)
to the number 32776.
