Ahmadinejad urges UN chief to stop US, Europe interference in region

Tehran, April 4, IRNA – Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged United Nations Secretary General Ban-ki Moon to stop the interventions of the US as well as some European countries in the affairs of regional countries.

In a phone conversation with the UN chief, President Ahmadinejad stressed the need for Ban’s more active role in managing the regional developments in line with the interests of its peoples.

He further expressed sorrow and concern over the incidents in a number of the Middle East and North Africa countries and said it was high time that the UN chief played a historical and decisive role in settling the existing conflicts based on understanding and dialogue in order to hinder events similar to Afghanistan and Iraq catastrophes.

Highlighting the failure of the UN Security Council in properly managing regional developments due to the mischievous acts of the US and a number of European countries, President Ahmadinejad said the Western governments were only after their own interests.

He said the double-standard attitudes of the Western countries regarding developments in Libya and Bahrain as well as their silence over the Zionist regime's crimes against the innocent Palestinian people proved their contradictory policies in the world.

The President believed necessary conditions should be prepared to solve the presently existing issues in a clam atmosphere of dialog and understanding.

He further stressed Iran’s readiness to play an active role in settling disputes in the region.

The UN chief, too, welcomed Iran’s active participation in managing regional developments.

He also expressed concern over the massacre of people in Bahrain and Yemen for their pursuit of democracy and freedom and called on the leaders of those countries to exercise restraint and heed to the demands of their peoples./end
