All Thai political parties support election

BANGKOK, April 4 (TNA) - Representatives of both government and opposition parties are supporting the next general election, expected the middle of this year.

Trainees on an advanced political and electoral development course, held a discussion on how an election could rescue Thailand from its current crisis. Speakers included Chamni Sakdiset from the Democrat Party, Plodprasop Suraswadi from the Puea Thai Party, and Somsak Prisananantakul from the Chart Thai Pattana Party.

Chamni said an election always relieved a political crisis because the majority of people could make their decision. He stressed all parties had to admit an election was a solution to crises and all parties involved in a crisis must participate in an election.

Plodprasop said he supported the next election and disagreed with a “no” vote, which would ruin democracy. He said the next election would let politics take another step forward, as it would lead to a new government people wanted. He pointed out an election might not relieve a crisis if its rules were unfair or non-democratic. Regulations should be adjusted to ensure a fair and democratic election. If an election does not facilitate people’s choice, movements outside parliament will grow and become difficult to control.

Somsak said he was worried, as the present crisis resulted from politics. Although the royal decree for the next election has not been issued, politicians have set up campaign posters to attack opponents instead of presenting their policies. This depressed him. He said such attacks would worsen conflict. He agrees with the Election Commission’s plan to complete amendments to three election-related organic laws before the election to prevent abuse of legal loopholes. (TNA)
