“Outcasts 3” leads Iranian box office

TEHRAN, April 4 (MNA) -- Masud Dehnamaki led Iranian box office receipts on Saturday with his political comedy “The Outcasts 3”, while Golden Bear winner “Nader and Simin, A Separation” came next.

“The Outcasts 3” sold 25 billion rials (about $2.4m) worth of tickets during Noruz (beginning on March 21) holiday since it opened across the country, distributor Ali Sartipi, the Filmiran director told the Persian service of Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) on Sunday.

The movie mimics Iranian candidates campaigning in the atmosphere of the June 2009 presidential election. Reza Ruygari, Behnush Bakhtiari, Mohammadreza Sharifinia and Ali Dehkordi are among the cast.

Dehnamaki’s “The Outcasts 2” followed the group after being captured by Iraqi forces. It became a box office hit, generating revenues of about 30 billion rials (about $2.8 million).

Like the predecessor, “The Outcasts 3” received negative reviews from movie critics. However, the reviews usually do not play a significant role in consumers’ decisions about comedy genre in Iran.

Asghar Farhadi’s “Nader and Simin”, which won a Golden Bear for the best film at the Berlin film festival and its cast ensemble received best actor and actress Silver Bears at the event, stands second having grossed about 12.5 billion rials (about $1.2 million).

Released by Hedayat Film, “One of Us Two” by Tahmineh Milani and “Women are Incredible” by Mehrdad Farid came next, taking 1.75 billion rials (about $168,000) and 7 billion rials (about $673,000).
