Flooding at Surat Thani hospitals improving

SURAT THANI, April 4 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Public Health reported on Monday that most hospitals in flood-hit Surat Thani Province are being restored, as high inundations in several provincial areas have eased and the situation should be returning to normal by next week if there were no more downpours.

Dr. Nattawut Prasertsiripong, Surat Thani's chief public health officer, said that floods at almost all provincial hospitals have been receding and staff can now go inside some hospitals for cleaning and restoring the buildings, except Tharongchang Hospital, one of flood-hardest hit hospitals in the province, as its buildings have remained inaccessible due to some 70-centimetre-flooding water currently.

Regarding to Punpin Hospital, where its buildings have not been submerged, Dr. Nattawut acknowledged that high inundations in front of the hospital have caused traffic problems and difficulties to medical personnel. According to the provincial public health chief, Punpin Hospital has, however, provided full facilitation for local flood-victims temporarily sheltering there; while sending out six mobile medical units to serve those sheltering elsewhere who are mostly suffering from flood-borne illnesses, including athletes’ foot and influenza.

Dr. Nattawut said that floods have also almost receded at several sub-district hospitals and their staff can now go inside for clean-ups, except AranyakamWari and Puang Promkorn sub district-based Hospitals, where flood waters remained as deep as some two meters.

The provincial public health chief has initially estimated that overall damage to Surat Thani's hospitals from the current flooding should be some 20 million baht. (TNA)
