Floods in southern Thailand receding in Trang

TRANG, April 4 (TNA) - Heavy flooding in Trang Province has been receding, with flooded areas reduced to four districts, from 10.

So Hemakul, head of Trang's disaster prevention and mitigation office, reported Monday morning that flood waters in the four districts of Muang, Kantang, Si Kao and Wang Wiset, was still as high as four metres. All four districts are located near the overflowing Trang River, where five dykes have caved in.

Flooding has also been caused by inflows of water from nearby Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Thung Song District together with a high sea tide.

According to the disaster prevention and mitigation office, more than 100,000 people of at least 35,000 households in Trang's 10 districts have been affected by the current flooding. Two flood victims have been confirmed dead in the province, while those living near deeply-flooded roads have been cut-off from other areas.

Meanwhile, an MCOT radio station in Trang has now resumed operation after a temporary halt since April 1. Flooding in areas surrounding the station has been receding to about half a metre from one metre. (TNA)
