EU MPs to debate EU nuclear development, broader ties with Ukraine

STRASBOURG, April 4 (Itar-Tass) -- A broader economic cooperation with Ukraine and the prospects for the development of the EU nuclear industry will be high on the agenda of a European Parliament session that will open here on Monday.
A European parliamentary group, which was already unofficially called the Friends of Ukraine, will be formed in the European Parliament this week. The EU top legislature intends to support Ukraine in the country's policy for European integration this way, the vice-chairman of the Committee for International Trade in the European Parliament Pavel Zalevski said earlier.
The European Parliament will study the prospects for the EU nuclear development after a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant. In a resolution put up for voting on Thursday, April 7, the European Parliament intends to urge the European Commission to revise and toughen the security standards at the nuclear power plants and to raise the alert level for combating probable nuclear disasters, a spokesman for the European Parliament told Itar-Tass on Sunday.
Another important item on the agenda of the European parliamentary
session will be the humanitarian situation on the Italian island of
Lampedusa, which illegal immigrants from North Africa have overcrowded for the last few months. The position of local residents and refugees, which began to arrive on the Italian island last February, after the change of power in Tunisia, causes major concerns in the European Parliament, the spokesman said.
During the traditional debates on the human rights violations in the world the European deputies will consider the current situation in Syria, Bahrain and Yemen, where massive riots are still raging. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton is to attend the European Parliament session.
