Kindling of Nazarbayev poster-most serious event of Election Day
ASTANA, April 3 (Itar-Tass) - The Prosecutor-General's Office called
the kindling of an advertising poster of incumbent head of state Nursultan
Nazarbayev as the most serious incident on the day of the early
presidential elections in Kazakhstan.
A high-ranking official of the Prosecutor-General's Office, Andrei
Kravchenko, said on Sunday that the incident took place at the entrance to
the city of Pavlodar. The law-breaker was nabbed.
All in all, law enforcers receive around 100 appeals, dealing mostly
with progress in the election campaign and explanation of the right to
vote.
As for the election campaign as a whole, according to Kravchenko,
"there is less the number of complaints than at the previous elections".
He attributes this to results of "active work of state organisations on
preparing for the elections" and "changes in election legislation, made
over the past five years".
The representative of the prosecutor's office called damage to
publicity materials as the most serious violations during the election
campaign. He explained that there were 77 cases when posters of candidates
were made unusable or were plastered over with other publicity posters.
The prosecutor's office also responded to attempts at using the
administrative resource. For instance, a chief in the sphere of public
health, issuing a written order to ensure a 100 percent turnout of his
subordinates, was sacked from his post in the Pavlodar Region.
As a whole, the number of complaints and violations of election
legislation was minimal during the election campaign, Kravchenko said in
conclusion.
The voting continues in the republic. Ballot papers contain four names
- incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Communist Zhambyl Akhmetbekov,
senator Gani Kasymov and environmentalist Mels Yeleusizov.
When the voting ends at 20.00, polling stations will start ballot
counting.
