President: Today's voting to determine Kazakhstan's future

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has voted in the snap presidential elections, which take place in the country on Sunday.

"Today, there is another historic moment when the world paid attention to Kazakhstan," Nazarbayev told media after voting. We hold historic elections as this is the year of the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence. We have overcome many difficulties, but there is still much to be done to modernize the state and society. Today's voting will determine our future."

The President has voted with his wife Sara Nazarbayeva at the polling station No 182 in Astana, which is located in the National Library of the Republic.

Polling stations are open from 7:00 a.m. to 20:00 p.m. on the Kazakhstan time. The authorities promise the most transparent elections in history.
Besides the incumbent president, Communist Zhambyl Ahmetbekov, leader of the Patriots Party, Senator Gani Kasimov and Tabiyat Ecological Union leader Mels Eleusizov participate in the snap presidential elections.

According to experts, the acting head of state will easily win the election. 70-year-old Nazarbayev has been in power for over 20 years, and according to opinion polls, is supported by about 90 percent of the population.

Nazarbayev said that the elections are held openly and honestly. All candidates had equal opportunities to promote their ideas.

"All the candidates had equal opportunities to visit all regions of our country," Nazarbayev said. They all expressed their ideas and thoughts to the Kazakh people. They have a value that we can take."

A total of 1,059 accredited observers will be monitoring the elections in the country. The most numerous mission will be from the CIS (425) and the OSCE/ODIHR (357 people). Over 250 foreign journalists monitor the elections.

Nazarbayev also thanked the Kazakhs for their active voting in the elections.

"I think that the Kazakhs, who come to the polls today, will vote for the future of our children, stability and interethnic accord, the future of our common home of Kazakhstan", the president said.

The legislation in Kazakhstan does not provide turnout threshold. Elections will be held for any number of voters. However, the voter turnout is an important factor in the election's legitimacy.

Presidential elections in Kazakhstan are characterized by high turnout. About 76.79 percent of voters participated in the last presidential elections in 2005.

The CEC will announce the preliminary results of the elections in the first half of April 4.
