Chemicals to be used to stop leak of radioactive water from Fukushima

3/4 Tass 37

TOKYO, April 3 (Itar-Tass) - Specialists plan to plug leakage of
radioactive water from the stricken Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant with special chemical agents, reported on Sunday the Tokyo Electric Power Company.
A crack some 20 cm long was detected on Saturday on the wall of a
concrete pit on the station's grounds in the littoral zone. It's likely that radioactive water from the building of unit No2 spilled into the pit along a small cut for power cable; then it got into sea in the area of the water-intake of the plant.
The crack was patched on Saturday evening; however, the volume of
leakage did not lessen.
Plant workers are looking for other similar cracks in the plant's
drainage system, which was seriously damaged in the March 11 earthquake.
In the opinion of experts, it was the water leakage from the power
unit that is the reason for a sharp surge in the content of radioactive substances in seawater close to the station. The radiation level in it tops the ceiling doze nearly 4,400 times.
