Civil Court grants injunction for protest leaders to clear Govt House

BANGKOK,Aug 27 (TNA) - Thailand's Civil Court granted an immediate
injunction ordering all People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD)
demonstrators to move out of the Government House compound in Bangkok and end road blockades, to allow cabinet members access to Government House.

If they did not, police would have to enforce the court order.

It came as around some female PAD supporters and members of the
Santi-asoke sect formed a human shield around PAD leaders to deter police
arrests.

The PAD leaders, however, vowed to stay put and would file an appeal to
the court order on Thursday.

The Criminal Court earlier on Wednesday issued arrest warrants for five
leaders of the anti-government PAD, its coordinator and three other PAD
activists, on grounds of leading demonstrators to storm Government House
and other state offices on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, retired Major General Chamlong Srimuang, one of the five core
PAD leaders, challenged authorities to come and make the arrests, saying
neither would he nor the other PAD activist leaders resist arrest or use
anyone as human shields to deter the arrest process.

The five PAD leaders are Sondhi Limthongkul, Piphop Thongchai, Gen.
Chamlong, Somsak Kosaisuk, Somkiat Pongpaiboon and the PAD coordinator
Suriyasai Katasila. The other three persons are Chaiwat Sinsuwong, Amorn
Amornrattananond and Therdpoom Chaidee, who led PAD stalwarts in Tuesday’s
raid on the state-owned NBT television station.

The PAD leaders were charged with rebellion and rebellious attempt,
organising gatherings of 10 or more people to cause public disturbances
and defying police orders to disperse.

Meanwhile eighty-two PAD activists arrested for breaking into NBT's
broadcast facilities remained in police custody, after the Criminal Court
denied them bail on Tuesday, charging them of committing violent crimes.

Schools in the vicinity of Government House and along Rachadamnoen Avenue
announced they would remain closed for another day on Thursday. (TNA)
