Floods in southern Thailand slightly affect economy

BANGKOK, April 2 (TNA) - Thailand’s Chamber of Commerce has acknowledged that the current southern flooding crisis is having limited impacts on the Thai economy, maintaining its projection of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year at 4-5 per cent.
When downplaying worries over the ongoing natural disaster impacts on the national economy, Chairman of Thai Chamber of Commerce Dusit Nontanakorn noted that the flood-hit areas are not Thailand's main manufacturing locations, nor major business base. Dusit said he believed that Thailand's GDP growth this year should reach 4-5 per cent as earlier targeted.
Meanwhile, President of the Thai Bankers’ Association Chartsiri Soponpanich said that all local commercial banks have considered measures to help their customers affected by the southern floods, projecting that, given high prices of local farm products and a strong domestic tourism prospect, the flood-affected South should recover within three months.
However, the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports estimated that the severe flooding in the country's southern region currently should post a total loss of some 3-4 billion baht to the local economy, as 80-90 per cent of tourists have now canceled their trips to the region. The ministry warned if the harsh weather continued, it would further hurt the southern tourism during the upcoming Songkran Festival in the second or third weeks of this month. (TNA)
