Thailand observes World Autism Awareness Day

BANGKOK, April 2 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) organized an event to mark the World Autism Awareness Day on Saturday, urging parents to observe their children and seek doctors’ help if the youths show signs of autism.

After joining a walk to open the event in a public park in the capital on the occasion of the World Autism Awareness Day, Deputy Bangkok governor Dr. Malinee Suvejjavorakit said that the World Health Assembly has designated every April 2 the World Autism Awareness Day--aimed to urge parents to find out whether their children or young relatives show signs of autism such as avoiding eye contacts, talking alone, speaking incomplete words and being unable to get along with others.

Dr. Malinee suggested that parents with such children seek immediate help from doctors because this group of children needs special care, and that such children may have different interest and capabilities from other people.

According to the Autism Parents Association, there are now about 100,000 autistic people in Thailand, some 10,000 of them live in Bangkok, and no one knows an exact cause of autism.

But autistic children who receive early treatment and proper education can have a successful life. Some autistic children are good at mathematics, music and arts. The association said that it is developing a home-based education program for local autistic children. (TNA)
