Death toll from floods in Thai South rises to 35

BANGKOK, April 2 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Interior's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said in its updated report on Saturday that a total of 35 people have been confirmed killed by flood-related incidents, namely flash floods and landslides, in Thailand's southern region over the past 10 days.

According to the official report, 15 out of the flood-related fatalities were in Nakhon Si Thammarat, eight in Surat Thani, six in Krabi and two each in Phatthalung, Chumphon and Trang Provinces.

Since March 23, Thailand's several southern provinces, including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani, Trang, Chumphon, Songkhla, Krabi, Phang-nga, Satun and Narathiwat, have been hit by severe flooding, affecting at least 558,300 people and causing damage to local infrastructure and over 917,000 rai of farmlands.

Authorities said that several more local people have been either injured or missing in the current round of southern inundations. In some flood-battered areas, with inundations as high as 1-2 metres, local villagers were reportedly either swept into the deep flooding water or buried in mudslides.

Meanwhile, Thai Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senneam said that the government plans to allocate a state budget of some two billion baht to assist the southern flood victims with an official approval by the Thai Cabinet expected on April 4. Thaworn noted that the Thai government assistance for the southern flood victims includes a 5,000-baht-compensation for each affected household. (TNA)
