EU to start its own military humanitarian operation in Libya, if
BRUSSELS, April 2 (Itar-Tass) -- The European Union on Friday decided
to hold its own military humanitarian operation in Libya, the press office
of the EU Council said.
The EU Council has decided on a military operation to provide
humanitarian support for the population of Libya (EUFOR-Libya), the
statement said.
The operation will be conducted as part of the common foreign and
security policy of the EU, if such a request comes from the UN.
The objectives of the operation could be evacuation and assistance to
the safe movement of refugees across the country, as well as military
assistance to agencies involved in the delivery and provision of
humanitarian aid.
Italian admiral Claudio Gaudiosi has been appointed to command the
operation, headquartered in Rome.
The EU military mission will rely on the provisions of resolution 1973
of the UN Security Council on Libya.
The action plan of the operation is extended over 4 months and the
estimated costs amount to 7.9 million euros.
