Thailand to use central budget to cope with natural disasters

BANGKOK, April 1 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Finance announced on Friday that it will ask the Thai Cabinet to spend a central budget to cope with natural disasters--which have now repeatedly cause damages to the nation.

Thai Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij told reporters that he will ask the Thai Cabinet at its next meeting to spend a budget of the government's 2012 fiscal year to relieve public hardships from natural disasters, especially repeated floods, and that his ministry is also receiving over 12 million baht of donations from agencies under its jurisdiction to help flood victims in the South.

Korn acknowledged that he has ordered his ministry's Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) to assess damages caused by current flooding in Thailand's southern region as well, especially in the local agricultural and tourism sectors.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Finance Areepong Phuchaum said that initially a budget to cope with emergency from natural disasters for each affected Thai province has been raised from 50 million baht to 100 million baht; while government-run banks will first shoulder debt and interest burdens for their customers.

Highways Department Director-General Veera Ruangsuksriwong noted that his department is repairing some 50 damaged highways in flood-stricken southern areas for temporary use first before full repairs to be done later. Veera assessed that highway damages in the Thai South to cost some 300 million baht. (TNA)
