Thai PM visits flood-hit Krabi

KRABI, March 31 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva travelled to flood-stricken Krabi Province on Thursday to inspect the situation and to visit affected people, including those at a village hard hit by flash floods.
Accompanied by MPs from his ruling Democrat Party, Abhisit was particularly inspecting the flash-flood-hit Moo 7 Village in Krabi's Khao Phanom District.
The Thai premier, who inspected the flooding situation and visit affected people in nearby Nakhon Si Thammarat Province on Wednesday, has instructed government agencies concerned to timely alert people in areas at risk of such natural disaster as flash floods and landslides; while urging people in the disaster-prone areas to follow up official statements.
The Thai premier reiterated that timely alerts and evacuations of people in the affected areas are to be prioritized by concerned government agencies to ensure public safety; while the public should also keep themselves updated by official reports, particularly those in flood-stricken areas now at risk of landslides.
Abhisit acknowledged that his government has already handed out a 5,000-baht financial assistance each to some 70-80 per cent households affected by severe inundations in Thailand's southern region late last year, promising that the Thai government will continue handing the financial assistance to the remaining flood-hit households.
Meanwhile, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban insisted before leaving for flood-hit Surat Thani Province early Thursday morning that the government could still handle the flood situation in Thailand's southern region, and that all parties were quickly assisting the flood victims. (TNA)
