Flooding in Thai south has not been relieved

TRANG, March 31 (TNA) - Although downpours have stopped in many flood-hit areas, inundations in Thailand's southern region have not relieved and strong winds and waves have persisted.

Flood levels in Trang Province have kept rising in six districts by nearly one meter and a dyke along the Trang River collapsed on two locations of Muang District although rainfalls stopped on Wednesday, as rainwater from nearby Nakhon Si Thammarat Province has been flowing in. The overflowing Trang River flooded the areas with some 3-4 meters deep and its currents were powerful.

Inundations in Satun Province, on the other hand, were receding except in La Ngu District where flood levels remained unchanged, but the flooding situation in the area should be relieved by Thursday unless there were more downpours.

Meanwhile, strong winds and high waves have continued in the sea. A fishing boat was sunk seven nautical miles off Koh Khai Island of Khura Buri District in Phang-nga Province and one fisherman has been missing. Local marine police have been searching for the person.

High sea waves were also smashing against houses along the coast in Laem Pho Sub-district of Yaring District in Pattani Province. The strong waves also damaged a nearly one kilometer-long section of a tarmac road on the coast with a crack as deeply as some three meters; while garbage was washed ashore and litters the road.
