Some 20 assumed dead in Thailand's southern floods

BANGKOK, March 31 (TNA) - The number of people assumed dead from severe floods in southern Thailand over the past week has risen to 20, most of whom have drowned in deep flooding water.

Dr. Chatri Charoencheewakul, Secretary-General to the Emergency Medical Institute of Thailand (EMIT), said on Thursday that 11 out of the 20 flood fatalities have been recorded in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 4 in Surat Thani and Krabi each and one in Phatthalung.

Dr. Chatri noted that landslides and flood-related-incidents have also been the main causes of the confirmed deaths, apart from most drowning cases.

The EMIT chief insisted, however, that mitigation teams, comprising some 60 rescuers and volunteers from Petchaburi, Prachuab Khiri Khan, Ratchaburi and Chonburi Provinces, have now accessed to the affected areas, particularly Surat Thani; while helicopters have been used for flood-stricken areas unreachable by land mitigation teams.
