Food products exported from Japan are safe, says top envoy

BANGKOK, March 30 (TNA) - Japanese Ambassador to Thailand Seiji Kojima affirmed on Wednesday that food products exported from Japan are safe from radiation contamination, despite fears.

Kojima insisted during his special interview with Thai News Agency (TNA) that radiation leaks from a troubled nuclear power plant in Japan's Northeast have not spread beyond a 30-kilometre radius of the Fukushima Daiichi plant. He can be sure, he says, as Tokyo has closely monitored and strictly controlled the levels of radiation in water and food products in affected areas to ensure they do not exceed international safety standards.

The Japanese top envoy in Bangkok said, to uphold national ethics, Tokyo would impose an all-out official ban on sales and consumption of Japanese food products as soon as a exceeding these standards are detected in any produce. Kojima stressed that he, therefore, is able to confirm that food products produced and exported from Japan have remained safe so far.

The Japanese ambassador thanked Thailand for all of its assistance, financial or material, for disaster victims in Japan, which has continued to come from various sectors. He then added that Tokyo is speedily rehabilitating disaster-hit areas, including the rebuilding of basic infrastructure, in parallel with the distribution financial support and other necessary supplies to affected people, including those donated by Thailand and others.

According to the Japanese diplomat, initial assessments from Tokyo show that the total damage caused by the catastrophe to the country will likely reach 16-25 trillion yen. (TNA)
