Thai PM prioritises public safety

BANGKOK, March 30 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has instructed concerned government agencies to alert people in areas at risk of natural disasters, such as flash floods and landslides in a timely manner; while urging people in the disaster-prone areas to follow official statements carefully.
The Thai premier made the remarks on Wednesday whilst personally inspecting the situation in Nakhon Si Thammarat, one of provinces hit hardest by recent floods, reiterating that timely alerts and the evacuation of people in affected areas are to be prioritized by concerned government agencies to ensure public safety. Giving a clear message to the public, he also said they should keep themselves updated on official reports, particularly those in flood-stricken areas now at risk of landslides.
Accompanied by Minister Attached to the Thai Prime Minister's Office Satit Wongnongtaey and two MPs from his ruling Democrat Party, Abhisit also visited affected people on Laem Talumpuk and in Tasala of Nakhon Si Thammarat's Pak Pa-ngan District to hand them relief supplies as well as financial support for relatives of fatalities, amounting to 50,000 baht for each.
The Thai premier acknowledged that his government handed out 5,000-baht each to some 70-80 per cent of households affected by severe inundations late last year, and promised that it will continue to provide financial assistance to remaining flood-hit households. (TNA)
