Fisher family of nine yet to be rescued from an island in Thailand's south

KRABI, March 30 (TNA) - A fishing family of nine people including a four-month-old baby girl has been stranded on Ko Mai Phai island for three days. Rescue workers attempting to help the victims, have since had to call off the mission after five-metre-high waves made it impossible for them to control the boat. The team will now have to wait for calmer conditions before undertaking a second operation.

Father of the family, Amnuay Manyeb said he had gone with them to catch fish just off the island. Then, two days ago he head to mainland for provisions and got trapped there due to high waves, and had to seek help from rescue workers for his family. He is seriously concerned about his baby, fearing the family will run out of milk to feed her.

In Na Yong district of Trang province, a flash flood from the Banthad mountain range has struck numerous areas, inundating the food market at Tambon Na Yong Nua. Since Tuesday, the flood has been over one meter making many roads impassable.

In Phatthalung province, another flash flood from the Banthad mountain range hit Na Thom dam, caused water levels in the reservoir to approach critical levels. If its soil crest collapses, water from the dam will strike the center of Phatthalung.

With haste, dam workers reinforced the crest with sandbags. Water from the other side of the dam has already flooded over 30 houses and local people have been evacuated to safe grounds. Residents near the dam and in the center of Phatthalung have been warned that flooding may occur if showers extend until Thursday. (TNA)
