Thai Government’s flood relief center to seek 2 billion baht for flood victims

BANGKOK, March 30 (TNA) - The Thai government’s flood relief center is aiming to seek approval from the cabinet to give 5,000 baht to each family affected, estimated to number over 300,000, by recent floods in the South. If accepted, the amount will be provided within a month, and will cost 2 billion baht.

A meeting took place at the national flood relief center Wednesday morning, headed by the Minister Attached to the Thai Prime Minister's Office, Sathit Wongnongtoey. Afterwards, Withayen Muttamara, deputy director of the center, said that rains would continue over the next two days and that people living near mountains should prepare for possible flash floods and landslides. He said the heaviest flooded provinces at this time were Nakhon Si Thammarat and Phatthalung.

On April 1, the flood relief center will set criteria and the amount available for the assistance, before proposing plans to the cabinet on April 4.

In a related development, Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha convened concerned authorities and ordered the 4th Area Army to coordinate help for flood victims in the South, alongside other government agencies. He explained that assistance will cover all types of flood damage from eleven relief centers and that mobile units of relief workers and doctors will also be deployed, along with mobile catering services, to sufficiently serve flood victims.

According to the general, the Army has already sent 10,000 bags of necessities to the South and has promised to supply more. It is also deploying 60 boats and arranging for more from other agencies. He then added that tomorrow he will supervise assistance for flood victims in the South by himself. (TNA)
