Cold weather has widespread impacts in Thailand

BURI RAM, March 30 (TNA) - Normally, at this time of year, it would be hot season in Thailand. But recently cold is prevailing across the country. As a result, people, animals and plants alike, especially those in the North and the Northeast, are suffering.

People in the northeastern province of Buri Ram are buying used winter jackets amid drops of the local temperature to 15 degrees Celsius.

Elsewhere in Yasothon province, boar raisers are having to build bonfires and use lamps to keep their boars warm as the cold and strong winds persist.

The cold has also caused the starvation of over 4,000 macaques at the Don Ling park in Phana district of Amnat Charoen province because no tourists have been showing up to feed them.

People living in and around the mountains along the Thai-Cambodian border in Kantharalak district of Si Sa Ket province are suffering from particularly frigid weather, and have also become dependent on bonfires too.

In Kalasin Province, people are facing not only cold weather but also widespread rain. There have been many road accidents lately, while hospitals have received admissions of about 1,000 respiratory patients per day. Meanwhile in Khon Kaen Province, such weather has damaged local agriculture, causing the price of vegetables and fruits to rise.

Over in Prom Piram district of Phitsanulok province, fluctuating weather conditions are making it increasingly difficult for rice farmers to control infestations of insects such as brown grasshoppers. In response to the issue, provincial authorities are currently preparing assistance. (TNA)
