Radiation level in main fishing areas in Far East remains normal
VLADIVOSTOK (Itar-Tass) - The radiation level in the key
fishing areas in the seas of the Russian Far East remains normal. Ships of
the Pacific Scientific Research Center of the fishing industry have
reported that on March 27-29 the traditional level there measured from 5
to 15 microroentgen per hour, the fish caught in these areas showed a
normal radiation level from 4 to 15 microroentgen per hour.
Four scientific research ships are out at sea now measuring the
radiation level in the Sea of Okhotsk west of Kamchatka, in the northwest
of the Pacific Ocean and near the South Kuril Islands. Experts have been
taking water and rock samples from the sea bottom and checking marine life
species for radioactivity.
The local authorities have tightened control over fish products at
Far Eastern sea ports. Last week three fish cargoes were brought from
Chile to the Maritime region with an overall weight of 43.5 tons. No
radioactive elements were found in any of the imported fish cargoes. No
marine life products from Japan arrived over the past week.
The information about the results of the checks of fish products is
loaded in a uniform date base available for all consumers
