Thai PM visits flood victims in South

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, March 30 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is visiting one of provinces worst-affected by the floods, Nakhon Si Thammarat, on Wednesday to personally assess the situation and to hand out relief packs to flood victims.
Abhisit was briefed on the current situation by the Province's governor upon his arrival and was then scheduled to visit affected people at Tasala Hospital and to hand out relief packs to those stranded on Laem Talumpuk in Pak Panang District.
The Thai premier acknowledged that flooding in several areas of the South remains critical, as torrential downpours had continued and severe inundations in some areas had cuf-off local people from the outside world.
Abhisit said the priority now should be an urgent evacuation of all people from areas at risk, including those stranded on flood-stricken islands, to safe places, followed by a speedy re-installation of public telecommunication systems in flood-battered areas.
Regarding donations to flood victims, the Thai leader suggested that donors make their contributions through reliable agencies to ensure that their financial or material support would reach the affected people.
Elsewhere, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Director-General Wibul Sanguanpong reported that the confirmed death toll from the current bout of heavy inundations in Thailand's eight southern provinces over the past week had reached 11. Seven of these, he said, were in Nakhon Si Thammarat, three in Surat Thani and one in Phatthalung, while more than 716,100 people had been affected in some 80 different parts of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani, Trang, Chumphon, Songkhla, Krabi and Phang Nga (TNA).
