PILER criticize Rahman Malik for issuing irresponsible statements against Pakistan cricket team
Karachi, March 29, 2011 (PPI): Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER) has severely criticized the statement of the Interior Minister Rahman Malik warning the national cricket team against match fixing and saying that the team members are under surveillance for Wednesday’s highly charged World Cup semi-final against India.
In a statement on Tuesday, PILER Executive Director Karamat Ali urged the President and Prime Minister to seriously take note of the warning on the occasion when the entire nation is ready to support the national team. "Such an irresponsible statement from an important member of the federal cabinet is not only demoralizing, but also spoils the spirit of the sport."
Threatening players with spying, the Interior Minister has once again exposed the shady nature of activities that Pakistan's spy agencies continue unabated, despite the presence of a democratic rule in the country that is obliged to protect the privacy and dignity of the citizens according to the Constitution of Pakistan. "The citizens of Pakistan have the right to conduct lawful activities without any interference by the state. The Interior Minister's "big brother" assertion points to the government support for shadowy forces that have always sought to run state within the state."
Executive Director PILER said that that statement can put adverse effect on the performance of the Pakistani team in the second semi-final at Mohali, India on Wednesday.
Karamat Ali advised the Interior Minister to focus on controlling corruption in the government departments instead. He said that the interior ministry has miserably failed to control law and order situation in all four provinces. "Instead of focusing on improving the rule of law in the country, the Interior Minister is making statements about matters that do not fall under his jurisdiction."
