Pakistani crime victims doubled in last 10 years, survey
Islamabad, March 29, 2011 (PPI): People who claim to be victims of crimes including theft and robbery have doubled in the last ten years, revealed the findings of a survey conducted by Gilani Research Foundation/Gallup Pakistan.
Almost 12% of all Pakistanis across the country say that they themselves or their family members have experienced such crimes. The comparable figure in 2000 was 6%.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question: In the past one year have you or any of your family members been a victim of theft, robbery or any other crime? In 2011 12% replied in affirmative as opposed to 85% who said they have not had any such experience. A decade ago in 2000 the corresponding figures were 6% and 93%.
The incidence of crime is higher in urban as compared to rural areas. According to the recent survey, relatively more urbanites (17%) complain of such crimes taking place as compared to their rural counterparts (10%).
The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2718 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during February 2011. Error margin is estimated to be approximately + 2-3 percent at 95% confidence level.
