Tajik official warns about real terrorist threat to region

DUSHANBE, March 29 (Itar-Tass) - Secretary of Tajikistan's Security
Council Amirkul Azimov said his country, as all the states of the Central
Asia region, feels a real terrorist threat and is taking measures to
counteract these challenges.
Azimov was speaking at a meeting of experts over "implementing the
second key guideline of the UN global antiterrorist strategy.
"Dushanbe has been selected as a floor for two-day discussions,
starting Tuesday, not by accident, given last year's events in the east of
the country, when terrorist groups from the outside tried to unsettle the
situation in the republic by force."
Taking part in the discussion, organized at the initiative of the UN
regional center for preventive diplomacy in Central Asia and with
financial assistance of the European Union, are representatives of Central
Asia states, NATO, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Collective Security
Treaty Organization, and several regional organizations.
According to the United Nations Development Program mission in
Tajikistan, the participants will consider ways to improve legal and
international instruments to combat terrorism, perfect interaction between
law-enforcement bodies with the view of preventing and fighting terroris,
counteract the funding of terrorism and the use of the Internet for
terrorism, as well as a number of other pressing problems.
The forum will work out recommendations and adopt a resolution.
