Thai FDA wary of radiation scare from Japanese imports

BANGKOK, March 29 (TNA) - Authorities from the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Customs Department have ordered the collection of samples of several imported foods from Japan for radiation tests.

Over 100 samples of shipped vegetables, fruits and seafood, including Tuna, have so far undergone radiation checks, held by the Thai Office of Atoms for Peace.

Up to 75 kilograms of potatoes were found with the radioactive substance iodine-131, and have been grounded until their contamination levels subsided naturally, which were expected to drop by half in eight days. Officials said burning was not an option due to the potential spread of radioactive substances into the air.

Top food imports from Japan to Thailand have included rice, seafood, vegetables and fruit. (TNA)
